Considering how much of US foreign policy and military action is in violation of international law (and even our own laws), one has to ask the question why "just following orders" only became an issue after Trump got elected.
Our entire response to 9/11 and just about everything we have been doing in the Middle East should have been refused by everyone in the US diplomatic corps and military establishment.
And by the way, if you have never been in the military it's nearly impossible for you to understand why going against orders (legal or otherwise) is so damned difficult.
